October 5, 2010 – Nancy McFarlane, president of the MedPro Rx, Inc. and Raleigh city councilor, will serve on the 2010 Women on Board steering committee in support of the NC Center for Women in Public Service (NCCWPS). The NCCWPS is a nonpartisan organization that prepares women for elected and appointed offices statewide. As a steering committee member, McFarlane will serve as an event ambassador for the NCCWPS second annual Women On Board event, scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 30 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Rocky Top Catering, located at 1705 E. Millbrook Road in Raleigh. The event will bring together business and civic leaders to celebrate, recognize and encourage women’s participation on boards and commissions in North Carolina.
“As a Raleigh City Councilor, I recognize how important it is that women serve elected and appointed public office positions,” said McFarlane. “I’m proud to support the Center’s mission and share what I have learned from my experience as an elected leader.”
Established in April 2009, Women on Board is a program of the North Carolina Center for Women in Public Service. The NC Center for Women in Public Service, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, prepares women to seek and serve in elected and appointed offices, advocates for systems and infrastructure to facilitate women’s involvement, and promotes the value of women in governance. The Women on Board program was designed to increase the number of women on the boards and commissions of North Carolina. The program focuses on systems improvements coupled with the preparation and presentation of individual candidates for appointed positions. Research shows that women bring unique skills and values to public service, including a more inclusive approach to policy-making, greater transparency of the process, and a focus on issues relating to women, children and families.
