Alzheimer’s disease and lysosomal storage research

Researchers are studying how the buildup of cellular toxins in the brain might be affecting how and when Alzheimer’s disease onsets. Scientists already understand that in order to effectively treat Gaucher disease – with Cerezyme – it is needed to help breakdown glucocerebroside. Studies are being conducted to see if there is a relationship between a lysosomal storage disorder and Alzheimer’s and several other diseases in which there is a buildup of toxins that the body has problems breaking down.
