New development in Gaucher disease research

Researchers at Yale University have made significant progress in the research of Gaucher disease. The group was able to create the disease in mice – something that scientists have been trying to do for the past 20 years. This will allow for a greater understanding of the condition in humans.

Gaucher disease is a rare, inherited metabolic disorder in which harmful quantities of a fatty substance called glucocerebroside accumulate in the spleen, liver, lungs and bone marrow. It may also, in some cases, accumulate in the brain.
